چکیده

It has been proposed that with the appropriate models, instrumented indentation test (IIT) data can be reduced to yield the uniaxial stress–strain behavior of the test material. However, very little work has been done to directly compare the results from uniaxial tension and spherical indentation experiments. In this work, indentation and uniaxial tension experiments have been performed on the aluminum alloy 6061-T6. The purpose of these experiments was to specifically explore the accuracy with which the analytical models can be applied to IIT data to predict the uniaxial stress–strain behavior of the aluminum alloy. Despite not being able to reproduce the physical shape of the uniaxial stress–strain curve, the results do indicate that spherical indentation can be successfully used to establish an engineering estimate of the elastic modulus and yield strength of 6061-T6. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Numerical Study of the Effect of Materials’ Plastic Behavior on Equibiaxial Residual Stress Measurement Using Indentation

Indentation is a new method for estimating residual stress. The plastic behavior of the materials under study can affect indentation parameters and, thus, influences the results of residual stress measurement. In this paper, the effect of yield stress and work-hardening exponent on the accuracy of residual stress measurements in steels and aluminums was studied. Results showed that, for m...

Evaluation of the tensile properties of a material through spherical indentation: definition of an average representative strain and a confidence domain

In the present article, a new method for the determination of the hardening law using the load displacement curve, F–h, of a spherical indentation test is developed. This method is based on the study of the error between an experimental indentation curve and a number of finite elements simulation curves. For the smaller values of these errors, the error distribution shape is a valley, which is ...

Elasticity Models for the Spherical Indentation of Gels and Soft Biological Tissues

AFM microor nanoindentation is a powerful technique for mapping the elasticity of materials at high resolution. When applied to soft matter, however, its accuracy is equivocal. The sources of the uncertainty can be methodological or analytical in nature. In this paper, we address the lack of practicable nonlinear elastic contact models, which frequently compels the use of Hertzian models in ana...

Modifying Stress-Strain Curves Using Optimization and Finite Elements Simulation Methods

Modifying stress-strain curves is one of the important topics in mechanical engineering and materials science. Real stress-strain curves should be modified after necking point as stress becomes three-dimensional after creation of throat, and consequently, equivalent stress should be used instead of axial one. Also, distribution of triple stresses across throat section is not uniform anymore, an...

Studying grain boundary regions in polycrystalline materials using spherical nano-indentation and orientation imaging microscopy

In this article, we report on the application of our spherical nanoindentation data analysis protocols to study the mechanical response of grain boundary regions in as-cast and 30% deformed polycrystalline Fe–3%Si steel. In particular, we demonstrate that it is possible to investigate the role of grain boundaries in the mechanical deformation of polycrystalline samples by systematically studyin...
